Cortland (W. Cortland) Butterfield (1904-1977)

Cortland (W. Cortland) Butterfield was born in Newark, New Jersey and studied at Cooper-Union Art School, the Art Students League, and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Perhaps best knows as a figurative painter, he also painted still lifes, florals, and marine subjects. Butterfield exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the PennsylvaniaAcademy of Fine Arts, Montclair Art Museum, and galleries in New York and New Hope, Pennsylvania. His works are in the collections of the National Academy, the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
